SET Snapshots

With each new set comes plenty of options to include in your various cubelets. There is no right way to build a cubelet, so there are no recommendations for what you should take out as new sets are released. The choices are yours!

Each set snapshot will briefly highlight cards you could include in your cubelet. There might be a card from a new set you like that isn't listed in the snapshot. That's fine! These are just the ones that jump out immediately for consideration.

Just have fun and experiment.

Streets of New Capenna Commander Cards

4/19/2022

Note: Just looking at just new cards added via the commander decks.

Denry Klin, Editor in Chief
Good value to it and the creatures you play after, assuming it lives.

Agent's Toolkit
A collection of counters to move onto your creatures is kind of neat.

Angelic Sleuth
Value out of your modified creatures.

Contractual Safeguard
Can get pretty nutty with the kinds of counters you can distribute.

Determined Iteration
If you have a token theme to your cubelet, this is an interesting addition.

Body Count
Depending on your cubelet, this could be a neat way to refill your hand.

Audacious Swap
Chaos at it's purest form. It will never be a land, so cast away.

Sinister Concierge
An interesting "removal" spell and minigame you get to play.

Lethal Scheme
Neat removal spell that will let you get into the deck a little more and make your creatures bigger.

In Too Deep
Turn things into a clue. Love it.

Cephalid Facetaker
An interesting clone, I'm sure there's a home for it in a cubelet.

Grand Crescendo
So much flexibility here whether you want a lot of tokens or just want to keep your board safe from a board wipe.

Killer Service
Might be too strong, but worth a shot.

Master of Ceremonies
This is what Cubelet is about, so fun!

Streets of New Capenna

4/15/2022

Boon of Safety
One-Drop Cubelet contender to protect one of your creatures and possibly control the opponent's next draw.

Depopulate
Draw a card and board wipe, nice alternative to some of the other board wipes out there

Inspiring Overseer
Nice little consideration for a Pauper cubelet. Or a blinking matters cubelet for that matter.

Rumor Gatherer
Scry is powerful in Cubelet, but if you are going wide, you get rewarded by drawing the card.

Expendable Lackey
Can't be blocked when you only have so much life to contend with in One-Drop Cubelet sure will be interesting.

Hypnotic Grifter
3 mana to connive is a steep cost, but the One-Drop Cubelet could always have mana sink rewards.

A Little Chat
Nice way to scrap a token or something for more cards.

Reservoir Kraken
It's like a Desecration Demon, but different. Might be hard to remove, but think of the fishes you'll likely get.

Slip Out The Back
Otherworldy Journey is already exceptional, this is a mana cheaper. Also a one-drop contender.

Witness Protection
A very cheap way to turn off the abilities of creatures.

Cuthroat Contender
If you're up on life, you have opportunity to close out the game by doing an extra point of damage. One-Drop contender.

Grisly Sigil
One-Drop Cubelet contender. With the low starting life, gaining one back (potentially 2) is significant and can help clean up the board.

Sanguine Spy
Early game control of the top of the deck into late game drawing cards. Deal.

Shakedown Heavy
Interesting subgame can be created, also a decent way for you to potentially draw cards.

Tenacious Underdog
Scrapheap Scrounger is just better for Cubelet, but this is a neat alternative.

Goldhound
First Strike AND Menace? What a One-Drop!

Light 'Em Up
A pauper cubelet might be interested in this. The sacrifice to clean up smaller threats or combine together to take out a bigger threat is tempting.

Professional Face-Breaker
Everything about this card screams Cubelet. Neat card.

Sticky Fingers
Menace, more mana, and draw a card when it dies. A neat little enchantment.

Strangle
The problem with Lightning Bolt is that it can go to the face and wipe out half a person's life in One-Drop Cubelet. Strangle fixes that problem.

Unlucky Witness
One-Drop Cubelet Contender. It dies, you get to replace it.

Cabaretti Initiate
One-Drop Contender. Another mana sink reward.

Gala Greeters
Unsuspiciously wonderful. It's like an upgraded Quirion Dryad.

Luxurious Libation
Technically a one-drop for the One-Drop Cubelet. Mana sink to win or play it light and reload with a body.

Charm Cycle
Rather than list them all individually, let's just say they are all good options.

Scheming Fence
This is funny and what Cubelet can be about.

Corpse Extraction
An interesting board wipe that also takes out a creature card from the graveyard.

Void Rend
If you happen to play a bunch of counter spells in your cubelet, this is a nice upgrade to Hero's Downfall, but otherwise, this is basically a second copy that can also hit enchantments/artifacts.

Fatal Grudge
Rid of pesky noncreatures by sacrificing your own, otherwise, it's everyone sacrifices a creature and you get to draw a card. Not bad.

Cement Shoes
Interesting subgame in the One-Drop Cubelet. Unsure if this is playable anywhere else.

Luxior, Giada's Gift
If you're playing planeswalkers in your cubelet, this is easy. This could also be an interesting include in a "counters matter" cubelet.

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

2/4/2022

Sagas - As long as the saga or the flip side does not search the library or have an otherwise awkward interaction with your cubelet, they are pretty interesting includes because of the fact that they transform into a creature.

Reconfigure - The mechanic as a whole is very cool and could make for a sweet thematic cubelet. Cards mentioned below with Reconfigure are the highlights that could be included in any cubelet.

Ninjutsu - The mechanic as a whole is very cool and could make for a sweet thematic cubelet. Cards mentioned below with Ninjutsu are the highlights that could be included in any cubelet.

Invoke Cycle - They all do some very sweet things at 5 mana. Rather than highlight each one, let's just say they are all good!

Dragonfly Suit
The crew 1 makes it very accessible and a flyer usually requires an answer from the table.

Farewell
Has a pretty big cost, but with it, some pretty great power in removing most problems all at once from the game.

Hotshot Mechanic
Pretty great if vehicles are a theme to your cubelet. A 2/1 artifact creature for 1 also helps delirium strategies as well.

Imperial Recovery Unit
Even getting one creature back seems great. Another fine vehicle to consider

Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa
Might be a little too strong late game to make an 8/8 flyer, but the interactions early game seem fun.

Lion Sash
If you share the graveyard, this is a nice little guy to clean things up, also pretty neat equipment

Lucky Offering
If you are suddenly adding a bunch of vehicles or cards with reconfigure, this is a possible solution to keep it balanced.

Mindlink Mech
There are usually a lot of interesting creatures in the cubelet, so copying them when you crew seems fun.

Mnemonic Sphere
If you're having problems getting delirium, this is an exceptional card to consider.

Mobilizer Mech
If vehicles are the game, this is a great way to help grind things out.

Biting-Palm Ninja
The "free" choice to potentially exile a problematic card is pretty great.

Blade of the Oni
Good stats all around. Hard to not consider it.

Dokuchi Silencer
The ability to destroy someone's planeswalker if you connect with Ninjutsu is something worth considering if you run planeswalkers in your cubelet.

Junji, the Midnight Sky
A lot to handle, but if the cubelet is built to contain a bomb like this, the run with it!

Mukotai Soulripper
Pretty neat card, as you have creatures that lose their "oomph" you'll definitely get some good value by sacrificing them.

Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion
You only have one library, so you get basically a free card at the cost of life once you hit a player.

Soul Transfer
Neat card with choices and if you happen to meet the conditions to choose both, sweet!

Tatsunari, Toad Rider
Neat effect if your cubelet is built around enchantments.

Lizard Blades
Fun way to give your creatures double strike.

Rabbit Battery
Fun way to give your creatures haste.

Simian Sling
One-drop cubelet might enjoy this monkey.

Spinning Wheel Kick
Obviously gets better later in the game, but a bite effect that can target multiples seems great.

Invigorating Hot Spring
Pretty neat enchantment. Removing a counter only once per turn seems pretty fair.

Prodigy's Prototype
Nice effect, good to help support a vehicle subtheme, the versatility to crew bigger vehicles with the token also nice.

Tamiyo, Compleated Sage
Of all the planeswalkers, this is the one that seems the most reasonable to play around with in cubelet.

Brute Suit
A heavy beater and decent to trade up in blocks.

High-Speed Hoverbike
Flash is a nice edition to an otherwise fine 2/2 flyer.

Innistrad: Crimson VOW

11/5/2021

By Invitation Only
A unique board wipe that can help get around those pesky regenerators.

Savior of Ollenbock
A classic effect that could upgrade your cubelet.

Catapult Fodder
The flipside, Catapult Captain, is interesting enough to try.

Graf Reaver
Another way to take care of a planeswalker, if you have an interest in adding those powerful spells to your cubelet.

Headless Rider
A no brainer, pun intended, if you are building a zombie themed cubelet.

Sorin, the Mirthless
Fair on each ability and not overly oppressive.

End the Festivities
Great for a one-drop cubelet. X/1's are usually the going rate in that kind of a cubelet, so it is an appropriate and thematic board wipe.

Cemetery Prowler
A good boi that can help keep the shared graveyard in check.

Ulvenwald Oddity
A big body that can close a game fast at the end of the game if you transform it.

Dorothea, Venegful Victim
The flip side will demand an answer, but still very fun for the time it is out there.

Halana and Alena, Partners
Nice effect for the rate, very good if you are able to increase their power.

Kaya, Geist Hunter
Very neat planeswalker with good abilities.

Innistrad: Midnight hunt

9/24/2021

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar
Very neat because it plays well into the fact that cubelets are often played as a multiplayer format.

Brutal Cathar
Possibly an upgrade if you are playing Fiend Hunter. The opportunity for multiple flips is one to consider.

Fateful Absence
Very nice removal spell. Great option to consider.

Intrepid Adversary
Very strong late game to help push those last points of damage in.

Malevolent Hermit
There's a lot here that supports cubelets. So many options and implications, definitely a card to consider.

Spectral Adversary
A great way to keep your biggest threat around in response to a boardwipe. Even greater late game.

Suspicious Stowaway
Interesting replacement for Looter if you don't have one. The flip side is just a raw draw, which is always nice.

Champion of the Perished
If you are building a spooky cubelet or some other themed idea that involves zombies, this is probably a great include.

Jerren, Corrupted Bishop
Game play is interesting enough to consider.

The Meathook Massacre
A unique opportunity as a flexible board wipe that can get around pesky indestructible creatures.

Tainted Adversary
Like the other adversaries, this is a fun opportunity.

Bloodthirsty Adversary
Adversaries are good and should be fun to try.

Reckless Stormseeker
Great aggressive creature with a great ability on either side.

Primal Adversary
I can't stress this enough, this cycle is good for cubelet and you have lots of opportunity here to try out a few.

Arlinn, the Pack's Hope
Probably too good for cubelet. If you are willing to try it, go for it.

Crackling Counterpart
Funny card, funny way of snagging a creature with sweet abilities.

Florian, Voldaren Scion
The play clause on this means that you can play the card you exile as the land for turn if you didn't have the ability to play it for real.

Siphon Insight
A very interesting way to essentially draw a card because you aren't getting any other kind of advantage since you all share the same library.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms

7/23/2021

Venturing into the dungeon - The new mechanic from this set, you have the option of each player being able to explore a dungeon, just like they would in any other format. More flavorful and aligned with the shared nature of Cubelet, there can only be one dungeon explored at a time and each player may make progress through the dungeon on their own. If a dungeon is completed, the individual who completes it is given credit and everyone else is booted from the dungeon.

Guardian of Faith
Interesting option to get around a board wipe. Fair body and cost for what it does.

Icingdeath, Frost Tyrant
Fair body for a flyer and the artifact after it dies is interesting to have in a cubelet.

Nadaar, Selfless Paladin
Easy way to introduce venturing into your cubelet and a very efficient creature to get you through a dungeon.

Portable Hole
Different and unique removal spell.

The Blackstaff of Waterdeep
If you have a heavy artifact cubelet, this is a neat payoff.

Demilich
Powerful. Being able to copy an instant or sorcery when it attacks is great and the shared replayability is a neat subgame.

Grazilaxx, Illitthid Scolar
Very interesting game play because you could return the creature to your hand to become a land if you need a land drop for the turn.

Acererak the Archlich
Very interesting subgame. Good to bring dungeons into the cubelet.

Ebondeath, Dracolich
Fast hitting and the great subgame. Might be a little too powerful, but worth trying.

Lolth, Spider Queen
Planeswalkers are always dangerous for cubelet, but the abilities of Lolth seem to be fair enough for its mana value.

Sphere of Annihilation
Interesting option for a board wipe. Tad nontraditional and could be interesting.

Zariel, Archduke of Avernus
Very fair and respectable Planeswalker to include in a cubelet if that is your thing.

Ellywick Tumblestrum
The minus ability may be absolutely too powerful, but the rest of it is pretty reasonable. Worth trying.

Barrowin of Clan Undurr
A mini Sun Titan and the ability to progress through a dungeon is food for thought.

Triumphant Adventurer
Very interesting design and a must if you are trying to make dungeon crawling an aspect of your cubelet.

MOdern Horizons II

6/18/2021

Overall, this set is a cubelet builder's dream. There are so many cards with tons of unique play that almost any card from the set is viable for a cubelet. If you are new to the format or getting tired of figuring out which cuts to make to include new cards, this set has enough to serve as a core for your cubelet. The list provided in this post are those that are just a cut above the rest and would be the ones to seriously include if you are updating a "Legacy" level cubelet.

Esper Sentinel
Annoying to use a removal spell for can gain you some much needed card advantage.

Out of Time
Has the potential to create an exceptionally chaotic board, which is always an exciting element to cubelet.

Prismatic Ending
Fairly safe removal spell that will get most permanents in a cubelet, and the cost is fair as it scales.

Subtlety
More than likely, the creature/planeswalker will end up on the bottom of the library, which is interesting for blue in a cubelet.

Bone Shards
Planeswalkers are always difficult to put into a cubelet, but this gives one more answer to make them viable.

Damn
Being able to be a spot removal or wrath may open up one card slot in the 100 with this flexible option.

Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
It's monke, what more can I say that hasn't already been said.

Endurance
A unique way to manage the shared graveyard.

Jade Avenger
Bushido is an interesting mechanic that doesn't see a whole lot of play, but this "bear" could see some good play.

Dakkon, Shadow Slayer
Surveil is powerful, the minus is fair and the ultimate isn't overpowering if you built your cubelet correctly. Great planeswalker to include if that is your thing.

Geyadrone Dihada
Similar power and potential as Dakkon. Demands attention from the field. Fair inclusion.

Master of Death
Interesting interactions with the field and surveil is a strong mechanic.

Strixhaven: School of mages

4/3/2021

Lessons and Learn - Lessons can be treated one of two ways with regards to Learn. The easy way is just like Commander, there is no sideboard or wishboard, so you would not be able to search for a lesson when you learn.  The other way would be to have a shared binder that if you incorporate Learn into your cubelet, everyone has access to the lessons and it is a first come, first serve on the lessons. Lessons listed below are assessed as if they were just normal spells and not specifically tied to the Learn mechanic.

Guiding Voice
Simple way to learn.

Leonin Lightscribe
In a combat centric cubelet, this seems like a great inclusion.

Show of Confidence
Interesting spell if you can get your storm count up.

Study Break
Another nice way to learn while being a neat way to mess with combat.

Curate
Not as powerful as Ponder, but a nice substitute if you are looking for one.

Multiple Choice
Sweet options and powerful if you get to do all of them.

Confront the Past
Two strong options, especially if you have planeswalkers in your cubelet.

Eyetwich
Simple little flying creature that gets you a little value when it dies. Kind of like a delayed Baleful Strix.

Draconic Intervention
A unique board wipe that will clean up problematic creatures by exiling them if they die.

Extus, Oriq Overlord / Awaken the Blood Avatar
Both sides provide two interesting strategies. Both are powerful, but can be contained.

Plargg, Dean of Chaos / Augusta, Dean of Order
Both sides provide two interesting strategies. Both are powerful, but can be contained.

Shaile, Dean of Radiance / Embrose, Dean of Shadow
Having to choose between these two gives some neat flexibility to the game play. Embrose feels strong with a +1/+1 counter strategy.

Deadly Brew
With a shared graveyard, you have access to everything that was sacrificed.

Expressive Iteration
An unique twist on card selection. Because you can "play" the cards, you can make the one you exiled a land if you haven't played a land that turn.

Fracture
A great inclusion if you are light on artifact, enchantment, and/or planeswalker removal

Lorehold Command
Great modes. Lots of flexibility.

Prismari Command
Great modes. Lots of flexibility.

Quandrix Command
Great modes. Lots of flexibility.

Silverquill Command
Great modes. Lots of flexibility.

Tend the Pests
Get some mileage out of your creatures by suddenly making more

Witherbloom Command
You guessed it. Great modes (except the first one). Lots of flexibility.

Kaldheim

1/28/2021

Foretell - Similar to adventures in Throne of Eldraine, you would have your own individual zone for the cards you foretell, should you decide to add this mechanic to your cubelet.

Rune Cycle - Each seem fine, not too overwhelming for a cubelet. Could be a nice addition to an equipment/auras matter cubelet.

Snow - Snow is a house rule, but generally speaking, the lands produced from placing a card face down do not make them snow lands. Obviously, if you are building a snow matters cubelet, that rule can and should be changed. Cards listed in the set snapshot will not include cards like Ascendant Spirit because snow is not part of the basic cubelet.

Clarion Spirit
Cubelet rewards the ability to cast multiple spells in a turn later in the game, so this might be a nice way to reward and look to close out a game.

Divine Gambit
Exceptional answer to a lot of problems and adds a little chaos and entertainment factor. Punishing if opponent has no permanents in hand.

Doomskar
Excellent boardwipe spell that can upgrade one of the other boardwipes, especially if adding additional foretell cards.

Halvar, God of Battle
If you have an equipement/auras matter cubelet, seems like a perfect fit, otherwise just a generically powerful card on either side.

Alrund, God of the Cosmos
Just the right level of entertainment without being too overly powerful.

Cosima, God of the Voyage
With a shared exile, this card would get passed around if people want to play that subgame. The Omenkeel won't exile lands, so you won't be playing anything with it in play.

Egon, God of Death
With a shared graveyard, it could be well supplied to keep Egon around and the back side isn't overly powerful.

Valki, God of Lies
Relatively fair for the cubelet. Tibalt might be too powerful, but worth the test.

Tibalt's Trickery
Unique counterspell and with an entire deck full on nonlands, you are going to get your value.

Esika's Chariot
Fine vehicle to add to any cubelet that has a respect for artifacts and can answer it.

Sarulf's Packmate
Limited all-star that looks great in a Pauper cubelet.

Toski, Bearer of Secrets
Very annoying, but if you have exile effects, would be fun to add to the game.

Frija's Retribution
Decent way to close out a game or turn the game around.

Sarulf, Realm Eater
Pernicious Deed might be too powerful, but the conditions on Sarulf make it seem more manageable.

Commander Legends

11/27/2020

Commander Legends brings a lot of potential for Cubelet. Cubelet is largely a multiplayer format. When looking at what makes a multiplayer format good, there is a lot of crossover between it and Commander. The two mechanics that seem to be standouts are Encore and Monarch. When designing your cubelet, these two could be dramatic focuses/themes of the cubelet or could be a splash mechanic in your overall construction.

One thing to note: there are a group of cards that reference if you control your commander, which definitely does not apply to this format, so they would be evaluated as if you didn't control your commander.

Vow Cycle
Interesting cycle of cards that can be political tools. Generally speaking, they are fine and you will probably want to have access to all of them or none of them.

Court of Grace
When you are not the monarch, this card seems fine. When you are the monarch, this card seems absurd without some sort of way to balance it.

Court of Cunning
Not ideal for this format due to shared library.

Fall from Favor
Powerful effect and an easy way to introduce Monarch into your game.

Court of Ambition
Might be too powerful, but worth a test.

Exquisite Huntmaster
The first time, it is basically a different kind of Flametongue Kavu, but gets interesting when you are able to cast it for Encore.

Court of Ire
Very powerful. Essentially a removal spell or a quick way to eliminate a player if you are the monarch.

Krark, the Thumbless
Adds a level of chaos to the game as long as it sticks around.

Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith
Because you control your land drops, you control how important rocks are to you,

Wheel of Misfortune
Interesting mini-game to play with the group. Might be fun to have in the deck for the first few plays, then look to swap it out or always make it a land.

Court of Bounty
Fundamentally does not work as your hand won't have lands in your hand when you aren't the monarch. This could mean that the card is fine since you can really only do something when you are the monarch.

Halana, Kessig Ranger
Having the ability to pay to have your creatures bite other creatures is unique and could be fun.

Araumi of the Dead Tide
Worth testing, might be too powerful. Just the kind of card you look for in Cubelet.

Belbe, Corrupted Observer
Everyone is hungry for mana, so this might actually stick around for a turn or two.

Gor Muldrak, Amphinologist
Just the right level of crazy/interesting for Cubelet
